Q Find an example of a real-world document or visual. This could be: • a print or online advertisement • a sheet of instructions (text or IKEA-style pictograms or a combination) • a graph or chart • a mass mailing • a flyer • the home page of a website • a brochure • a book cover • a billboard or poster • an annual report (try browsing annualreports.com) • probably anything that you come up with will work! Using the concepts in chapter 5 (such as contrast, repetition, typography, color, justification, white space, or the intention behind the specific type of infographic used: bar graph, pie chart, etc.), discuss whether you think the design is successful or not and why. Submit your analysis in the form of a memo to Dr. Ramert. It should be about a page long (single spaced). Please also include the document/image itself (screen shot, photo, link, or whatever works so I can see what you are analyzing!). The goal of this exercise is to think about and discuss document design and visuals, so that you can apply the same thought to your Final Writing and Design Project (which will be introduced next week).
